Barbados Association of Retired Persons

The Barbados Association of Retired Persons (BARP) is dedicated to improving the quality of life of older persons throughout the island of Barbados. The association is a non-profit, non governmental organisation (NGO) which actively promotes the independence, dignity and purpose in life of its members, representing and expressing their views and concerns, and taking action to bring about change. With over 24,000 members, BARP is one of the largest organisations of its kind in Barbados and one of the fastest growing.

Members of the Barbados Association of Retired Persons have found that the Association’s benefits and discounts scheme is exceedingly useful when it comes to savings on purchses across the island. These savings can range anywhere from between five and twenty-five percent at over 500 businesses throughout the island, including insurance companies, health services and hardware suppliers.

The Barbados Association of Retired Persons usually has a packed diary of entertainment and social events, as well as their range of educational seminars and workshops where members over 50 can learn about topics of particular interest.

Other benefits of the Barbados Association of Retired Persons' membership include a free Legal Guidance Service, a Personal Assistance Fund for members in dire need and the BARP GoldenHealth Insurance Plan which is available to eligible BARP members. BARP members also receive the BARP Magazine, Fifty Plus, free of charge, twice a year.

The aims and objectives of the Barbados Association of Retired Persons are all easily achieved as a result of the abundance of wisdom, experience and compassion within the association. Members assist with the many challenges facing the elderly in Barbados by volunteering their time as part of the many community service programmes or by becoming involved in campaigns to put a stop to any unjust business practices that may occur.

The Barbados Association of Retired Persons makes an extremely important contribution to the lives, not only of its members, but of all those aged 50 and over in Barbados. As well as their community projects and social and educational activities, the sheer size of BARP’s membership means that policy and decision makers in Barbados will have little option but to pay increasing attention to what BARP has to say. This ensures that the views and concerns of persons aged 50 and over in Barbados can be heard. BARP members and those they represent now have a ‘voice’, and that is the first and most important step in the process of achieving real and lasting change.
