Golf VacationsDespite being comparatively small in size to many of the larger global powers, over the years, the island of Barbados has become a destination of choice for persons seeking all types of vacations and recreation. Of note, is the island's increasing reputation as a fantastic venue to which to plan a golf getaway or holiday.
Barbados can lay claim to having five courses which can safely meet international standards. There is the Sandy Lane Golf Course and Royal Westmoreland on the west coast, Rockley Golf Course and Barbados Golf Club on the south coast and one on the north-west, Almond Beach Village. With Sandy Lane, having a reputation par excellence.
The island has played host to the World Golf Championship World Cup in 2006. This was a 4-day tournament, which was attended by and had the participation of many of the top names of the golfing fraternity at that time. What a major achievement for Barbados. On an annual basis, several tournaments are held. So for example in 2011, the Sir Garfield Sobers Golf Championship is being held in May and in the summer month of July 2011, there will be the Caribbean Amateur Junior Golf Championship. Both tournaments are open via a registration process.
As a result of this growing trend of Barbados as a destination of choice for golf vacations, a number of the hotels have also entered into arrangements with many of the golf clubs in order to arrange special packages. Hotels such as The Allamanda, Hilton Barbados, Dover Beach Hotel, and Plum Tree Club are a few examples. Guests at these and other hotels have aspects such as preferential rates or tee times as part of their accommodation arrangement.
Selecting and coming to Barbados for a golf vacation is becoming quite "en vogue".
