The Shopping Experience in Barbados

Along with the sea, sand and sun, shopping in Barbados is part of the main reason visitors frequent our island. Shopping in Barbados offers various options from which you can choose. We've listed a few places within the Bridgetown area where you can easily become a part of that well sought after experience.

 

Bridgetown

Bridgetown (or "town" as it is so often referred to by locals) is the capital city of Barbados and home to just about everything you need while on the island. Shoppers will be able to find duty free jewellery, perfumes, electronics, arts and crafts and clothing. The largest department stores, shopping malls and duty free shops are located on Broad Street.

 

After a period of shopping you can feel free to rest at one of the restaurants in the Bridgetown area.

 

This commercial centre opens from approximately 8am until 4:30pm during the week and on Saturdays it is normally opened from approximately 9am until 1pm. All major credit cards are accepted and most hotels will offer a free bus shuttle in and out of the city.

 

Cave Shepherd

Known as Barbados' leading department store, this 100 year old store is located at the top of Broad Street in Bridgetown. Here you will find only high quality goods that are all available at duty free prices inclusive of, but not limited to swimwear, perfumes, brand name clothing and jewelery.

 

Colombian Emeralds International

Located opposite Cave Shepherd on Broad Street, Colombian Emeralds International is an over 40 year old international duty free jeweler that stocks fully guaranteed and certified precious stones. Colombian Emeralds International also offer Instant Credit and Savings when you visit them.

 

Correia's

Located on Prince William Henry Street, this is Barbados' oldest and longest running jewellery store. Manager/Owner Maurice Correia has a wealth of experience in the jewellery business as a trained diamond cutter and gemologist.

 

DaCostas Mall

Located on Broad Street in the capital city of Brigetown, this architecturally intriguing building is quite a popular site when it comes to shoppers to the island of Barbados. It is the oldest mall on the island and boasts a wide selection of jewelery, china, crystal, shoes, beachwear, etc. Within this mall you can also find food courts, a supermarket and on the second floor, there is KFC Restaurant.

 

For a bit of history, it is interesting to note that the clock at the very top of this mall was built in 1898 by Thomas Clock Company of Thomaston, Connecticut, USA.

 

Diamonds International

In the Caribbean, Diamonds International stores are renowned for their leadership in loose diamonds, gold and silver jewelery, luxury watches and diamond jewelery. Located on both upper and lower Broad Street, Diamonds International also has an International Pen World for those of you who hve a passion for fine writing instruments.

 

Harrisons

Located on Broad Street in Bridgetown, Harrisons is a major retailer of designer sunglasses and leather bags with brand names such as Land and Guess. Harrisons has two locations on Broad Street.

 

Little Switzerland

With over 50 years in jewelery retailing, Little Switzerland has certainly been able to define the meaning of opulence. Located on Broad Street, Little Switzerland offers luxury branded time pieces and watches all at duty free prices.

 

Mall 34

Housing more than 20 shops, this mall certainly gives visitors and locals a great amount of options from which to choose.

 

The Royal Shop

This family owned and operated business sits on Lower Broad Street in Bridgetown. They boast a large selection of fine jewelery, bone china figurines and pearls.

 

Pelican Village

Located on the outskirts of Bridgetown, near to the Bridgetown Port, this attractive and spacious arts and crafts shopping village showcases what Barbados has to offer in the way of local handicrafts. While in the Village, you can also see some of these talented Barbadians at work on the potter's wheel, blowing glass, rolling cigars or even making jewellery.

 

Cheapside Market

As the name so aptly describes, 'Cheapside' is the place where early birds go to get the freshest produce there can find in Barbados on the 'cheaper side'. Located just next to the General Post Office in Bridgetown, Cheapside is a hive of activity that's filled with lots of colour, fruits, vegetables, vendors and craftsmen.

 

Old ladies in broadly brimmed hats, colourful dresses and aprons with more than enough pocket room, are among the many who greet you in this market to help you decide what you should really buy and even are more than willing to 'give you a bargain' if you so desire. Whatever you need to cook with you can find here. Yams, potatoes, eddoes, carrots, bananas and many other fruits and vegetables are available in this open market. You can also purchase unique jewellery, leather, handmade and household goods here.
