Nettle

The nettle plant can be seen growing throughout Barbados in selected areas to heights of up to three (3) ft at any given time. Stinging hair with sharp spines covers this entire plant with these spines containing an acrid fluid, the active principal of which is said to be bicarbonate of ammonia. Its botanical name 'Urtica' is derived from the Latin word Urere, which means to 'burn'. Dioica means 'two dwellings' because male and female flowers grow on different plants.

Nettle contains calcium, copper, fatty acids, folate, iron, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, selenium, sulphur, zinc, and vitamin B1, B2, B3, B5, C and E. When I was recovering I used nettle in salads and tea, I believe the chlorophyll property worked. Nettle can also be used for goitre, inflammatory conditions and mucus conditions of the lungs, as a diuretic expectorant, pain reliever and tonic. It is also good for benign prostatic hyperplasia, anaemia, arthritis, rheumatism, hay fever and other allergic disorders.  It is very effective in the removal of kidney stones and treating urinary tract infection.

Another source notes that nettle prevents hair loss,  is a good hair tonic and is used in many hair care products to restore natural colour and growth.  In 2007,  I removed all my hair from my head and in 2008 people marvelled at it’s tremendous re-growth and  shine.  I credit the fast re-growth to a hair oil I made from a concoction of local nettle and other plants.

Nettle is also recommended for persons who want to lose weight.  Research shows that oils in nettle assist in suppressing the appetite. It is also recommended as a cleaner for persons who have oily skin and  eczema.
