Shak Shak Tree, Barbados Pocket Guide

Shak Shak Tree

The Shak Shak (Albizia lebbeck) tree is a relatively large tree with bipinnate leaves. It carries a white fragrant flower with countless long stamens. The pod of the Shak Shak tree is actually the fruit of the tree and usually contains somewhere between six to twelve seeds. Also known as Woman's Tongue in Barbados, the Shak Shak tree is well-known for the continual, gentle rattle of its pods in the wind. The seemingly unkind name 'Woman's Tongue' was given to this tree as a result of the constant noise the seeds make as they rattle inside the pods. These beige coloured pods usually mature from November through March in the island of Barbados.
