Barbados' Kathryn Dottin - Born to Teach

She hails from a family of teachers. Indeed, her family boasts four generations of educators, all of whom have left significant marks on the educational landscape of Barbados.

And Kathryn is no exception, for with the manifestation of her vision - Dottin’s Academy (DA), opened in 1999 - she has changed the face of private, secondary education in Barbados.

During her many years of teaching, Kathryn recognized the need for a new and creative learning environment in which students' individuality and uniqueness is recognized and encouraged in a manner that enables their highest academic goals.  DA is that institution.

First educated at St. Paul’s Primary School, Kathryn counts Foundation Girls’ School (Barbados); George W. Wingate High School (Brooklyn, NY), State University of New York at Albany (Albany, NY) and Brooklyn College (Brooklyn, NY) as her alma maters.

Kathryn’s varied job experience, as well as her qualifications, professional teaching experience and motherhood of one son, Daanyaal, now attending university abroad, have equipped her with the necessary skills to accept the challenge of businesswoman-educator.

Dottin's Academy Program

DA was originally a co-educational school. In September 2000, the Management determined to address the needs of secondary school-aged boys and made the adjustment to an all-boys institution. DA provides each student with the individual attention needed to help him reach his highest potential. The school’s innovative academic structure helps the staff to meet the students’ needs. The success of this academic approach is proven by our students' high academic achievement.

Currently situated in Navy Gardens, Christ Church, Barbados DA is centrally located in an attractive and tranquil setting conducive to successful learning.

While student academic advancement is the school’s primary goal, DA prides itself on the successful molding of organized, dedicated and disciplined future adults. Ms. Dottin firmly believes that the process of acquiring an education is threefold comprising the student, the teacher and the parent(s). Hence, DA achieves this union through various approaches such as an active Parent-Teacher’s Association, Parent-Teacher Conferences and culturally themed End of Term Gatherings. The theme for Term Two, 2010 was Egypt. Combined with its open door policy for parents to meet with Form Teachers and the various inter-house competitions, all objectives are successfully met.

Its classrooms, housed in the two-storey building, are computerised to facilitate the incorporation of technology into the school’s teaching-learning process. The Academy’s cafeteria provides students with healthy snacks during Break and nutritional, hot meals for Lunch.

DA prides itself in providing our family of boys with a clean, safe, nurturing environment as we facilitate their certification in the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) examinations. In addition, DA instills values in our students, thus creating conscious and conscientious citizens ready to contribute to Barbados and the world.
