The Dauntless Tomb Memorial, St. Matthias Church, St. Michael, Barbados Pocket Guide

The Dauntless Tomb Memorial

A marble tomb standing in the southern area of St. Matthias Church, St. Michael, Barbados is the location provided by the Royal Navy to house the remains of fifteen (15) officers of the HMS Dauntless as well as the Captain's Steward.

Throughout the voyage, some crew members died on board, while others perished after they anchored at Carlisle Bay in Barbados.

The Dauntless served on the North American and West Indies Stations. It set sail on November 10, 1852 from St. Thomas in the U.S Virgin Islands en-route to Barbados. While en-route to Barbados, a total of eighty-three (83) crew members died of yellow fever. This would have resulted in some being buried at sea, while the others were buried at the Garrison.
