Christmas Worm Making its Way Across a Pavement, Barbados Pocket Guide

Christmas Worms

There doesn’t seem to be much information available on what we call the Christmas Worm in Barbados. This is the name that it is given locally but unfortunately what is considered the common name here does not necessarily mean that it is the correct name.

There are also known as coffee worms on the island of Barbados because of the scent they emit when crushed.

These worms are usually seen as quite cute and harmless in the eyes of children. As part of their outdoor activities, children would take a stick and let the Christmas Worm climb onto it while it performs a balancing act.

According to the A-Z of Barbados Heritage (It is claimed these were introduced in the 1960s or 1970s).
