Clammy Cherry Tree, Barbados Pocket Guide

Clammy Cherry Trees

The word clammy means unpleasantly damp and sticky or slimy to touch and such is the case with Barbados' very own Clammy Cherry. This cherry can be eaten in salads but the children of Barbados have been known to use it as a glue because of its tenacious properties.

The Clammy Cherry tree (Cordia obliqua) has branches that fall with somewhat rounded leaves. The fruit of this tree is light yellow to slightly greenish, with a light-red tinge at the time of full maturity.

In Barbados, the Clammy Cherry tree can be used to make fish pots and home-made crciket bats.
