DrivingThere are many similarities that bind us in Barbados to England. After all, we are called 'Little England' for more than one reason that has pertinence to life in England. As per the English way, we also drive on the left hand side of the road. As normal as this may appear to the people of Barbados, it may very well take some getting used to for those coming from North America. The island of Barbados offers miles and miles of scenic coastal roads that more often than not cause visitors to pull alongside them in order to capture such awe-inspiring scenes. In most instances outside the highway, roads are narrow and call for skill and attention in maneuvering. Not to mention, potholes and poor lighting on many roads may call for additional attention to be paid on your part when driving. Caution should always be taken on the roads of Barbados as most of them have no shoulders but heavy pedestrian and bicycle traffic. Barbadians have grown accustomed to the road conditions on the island and have developed certain skills when driving on these roads. You, the visitor need to act with caution. Of particular importance, is the fact that it is illegal to drive on the island of Barbados without a seat belt as the usage of such is compulsory. Children under the age of five (5) years old should be fitted to a child safety seat. Children are not allowed to be stand between the front driver and passenger seats.
