The Roachford family returned to Barbados in 1984 and brought two (2) Swedish horses by the name of Ranja and Goliath. Victory was in the blood of these warmblooded animals as Ranja, the mare, competed that same year right here in Barbados at two shows and won two first places and one second place in Show Jumping. Goliath on the other hand has been a consistent performer and as such has earned himself merit of Champion in local Dressage Championships and currently serves as stud for the breeding programme.
The Roachford family opened the Caribbean International Riding Centre in 1986 with a mission of fully marketing the sport on the island in an effort to influence greater participation on the parts of Barbadians. So successful was this mission that to date, the Centre is the only Riding Facility that has consistently stayed opened since its inception.
Mrs. Elizabeth Roachford or "Mother of Dressage" as she is affectionately known, leads the team at the center. She comes ably qualified as she is the first certified local Dressage Judge and currently holds the position of Chief Dressage Judge of the Barbados Equestrian Association.
Courses
The Caribbean International Riding Centre is a member of the Barbados Equestrian Association and does English riding only. Hard hats are obligatory on all rides and will be supplied by the Centre.
Private Lessons in both Show Jumping and Dressage can be arranged. Their In-House Instructors compete up to the standard of Prix St. George & Intermediare 2 in Dressage and they form part of the 2003 Barbados Dressage Team at the Pan American Games.
Ride Barbados Tours
Since 1987, the Caribbean International Riding Centre has provided both the people of Barbados and visitors with horse riding tours throughout the natural heritage trails of the island's spectacular east coast. Due to the caliber of service that was provided by the professional staff at the Centre, their received high praises both locally and internationally that automatically boosted their demand hence acting as an effective marketing tool for the Centre.
Their trails take you through the original Rain Forest of Mahogany and Bearded Fig Trees, where the name Barbados is thought to have its origins. The jaw-dropping dropping views of Barbados' East Coast are seen through a new eye once you mount one of these horses and get on one of these trails.
The Beach
Riding along the beaches of Barbados' rugged east coast is yet another invigorating experience that is lived out at the Caribbean International Riding School. Not quite like walking or running on the beach as this experience leaves you absolutely thrilled beyond words.
