Cave Shepherd Ideal RestaurantBridgetown is the capital of the island of Barbados and is generally a hive of activity day in and day out. The Cave Shepherd Department store has been a flagship location in town for more than three decades. No surprise then that one of the most central and extensive restaurants can be found on the top floor of Cave Shepherd and is suitably called "The Ideal Restaurant". Open Monday to Saturday from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm, it could not be better positioned.
The Ideal restaurant specializes in Bajan food and offers a expansive array of dishes which extend from the time you join the line to as far as the eye can see. One can choose from peas and rice, creamed potato and a delightfully cheesy macaroni pie, shepherd's pie or chow mein. Then one can pick and choose from baked or stewed chicken, beef stew, lamb, flying fish and on certain days add the baked pork or souse (pickled pork). All the foregoing would have been seasoned such that one would feel that the meal was prepared by the matriarch of an average household in Barbados.
If that is not enough, there is more than enough salad options to act as a stand-alone meal or complement what might prove to be a piling plate. Cole slaw, potato salad, tossed salad, pickled cucumber… need more be said? There is no way one can argue that there is nothing to eat in Barbados.
Specializing in Barbadian-styled food, the meal would not be complete without a glass of mauby, fruit punch or coconut water. This is not to say that the familiar sodas (coke, sprite or ginger ale) are not available as they most certainly are. A slice of pudding, pone (a mellow home-styled bread), or fruit cocktail are just a few of the sweet options which might be there for the taking on any given day.
The Ideal Restaurant is fully air-conditioned and it has more than ample seating for the throngs of people of all walks of life who frequent there on a daily basis.
