Fitts Village BeachFitts Village is a small fishing village on the West Coast of Barbados, in the parish of St. James, with Crystal Cove, Batts Rock Bay and Paradise Beach to the south, and Paynes Bay, Sandy Lane Bay and Holetown Beach to the north.
Fitts Village was named after Benjamin Thomas Fitt who was the original owner of this delightful area of land sloping down to the warm, calm aquamarine waters of the Caribbean Sea. Fitts Village is still very much a fishing area, and you can often see some of the old fashioned Bajan fishing boats in this area. There is also a fish market at the neighbouring village of Paynes Bay.
The beach at Fitts Village is beautiful. An enormous expanse of white powdery sand is bordered by Casuarina trees and hibiscus bushes along the shoreline. The beach here is usually quiet and therefore the ideal place if you just want to relax, to read, or to just 'be'.
The sea at Fitts Village Beach is relatively calm and safe for swimming, but be careful of the rocks and remember that there is no lifeguard on duty should you encounter difficulties. If you prefer something more active, the consistent waves here are usually just right for boogie boarding, skim boarding and newcomers to surfing, while visitors to Barbados who enjoy snorkelling can observe a wide variety of the Caribbean's brightly coloured sea life feeding in this area’s reefs.
If you want something to eat, there is a beach bar where you can purchase snacks and drinks, and there are changing areas, showers and toilets. Fitts Village Beach is also directly across the road from Jordan's supermarket if you’d like more choice, and there are plenty of picnic tables under the trees near the beach and at the open esplanade nearby.
Visitors to Fitts Village Beach might even be fortunate enough to catch a rare glimpse of the turtles that occasionally frequent this area.
