Silver SandsSilver Sands is on the South East Coast of Barbados in the parish of Christ Church, just a short distance from South Point Lighthouse located at the southernmost point in Barbados, with Round Rock, Inch Marlow and Long Bay to the east.
Silver Sands is often referred to in conjunction with Silver Rock and Round Rock. These three locations form the Silver Sands area, a unique location where fresh winds blow the white sands into dunes secured by vegetation. Few plants can grow in the really salty sand near to the sea, but the ones that can flourish here manage to prevent movement of the windblown sand thus allowing other plants to take hold. The dunes are subsequently formed as a result of these first plants and, with the sand on these dunes being less salty, additional beautiful plants such sea grape and Manchineel trees become rooted and thrive.
Silver Sands is not the easiest place to find, but once there you will discover a lively, active beach. This quarter of a mile long, wide beach of pure sugary white sand leading to restless azure waters is also the perfect place to relax, and constant refreshing breezes allow you to sit and observe the various activities taking place on this very popular Barbados beach.
The sea at Silver Sands can be very rough for ordinary recreational swimming and, depending on the time of the year, there can be medium to high waves, undertow and strong currents. There is also no lifeguard on duty at Silver Sands Beach, so always exercise the usual caution if you decide to go in the sea - make sure you are not alone, and stay close to the shoreline.
The strong winds and protective reef at Silver Sands have however led to the area being primarily notorious for its windsurfing and kitesurfing activity, and it has developed into a world class destination for windsurfing enthusiasts who flock to Barbados to be a part of this location that hosts the premier windsurfing events and competitions. Equipment for these and other watersports can be rented on the beach at Silver Sands, though these are mostly for experienced surfers as the waves and swells are too powerful for beginners or intermediates.
If you are planning a visit to the beach at Silver Sands, there are various amenities available such as showers and toilets and some nearby refreshments and food retail outlets (though not on the beach). There is also a children's playground, and picnic tables are conveniently located in the shade of the trees lining the beach. In addition, there is a floodlit sports field nearby where sports lovers can watch a game of local football or cricket in the cooler evening temperatures.
The quirky, attractive fishing village Oistins and the historical South Point Lighthouse are attractions to Silver Sands that can be combined with a trip to the beach.
